Mob in Med! : A Look Back at the Workshop in Reggio Calabria

October 2025

A look back at the three-day Mob in Med workshop series in Reggio Calabria!

From October 2 to 4, 2025, participants in the Mob in Med project gathered in Reggio Calabria, Italy, for a workshop filled with discussions, reflections, and collaborative ideas.

After more than a year of remote work, these three days provided an opportunity to reconnect, share experiences, and, above all, make tangible progress toward our shared goal of amplifying the voices of Mediterranean youth in the face of barriers to mobility.

At a time when mobility remains a privilege for many, this gathering provided a space to politicize these realities, connect them to one another, and develop advocacy tools rooted in lived experiences.

Day 1: Getting to know each other, sharing, laying the groundwork 🌱

The workshop began with an icebreaker session that allowed participants to match faces and voices to names, share stories, and exchange experiences. Very quickly, the discussions revealed that, despite differing contexts, the barriers to mobility are common across regions.

In the afternoon, it’s time to work on the recommendations! Drawing on real-life situations experienced by the participants, the discussions focus on the shared goal of turning these observations into policy proposals.

A discussion with a local elected official provides food for thought and allows participants to test their ideas against the realities of institutional advocacy.

Day 2: Discuss, refine, bring to life 🌳

The day began with a meeting with local activists working on mobility issues. Using Calabria as an example, the discussions raised broader questions: What is the point of large-scale infrastructure if it does not meet the needs of the people? Who decides? And for whom?

These discussions reflect the participants’ experiences and inform the afternoon’s work. Working in groups, they refine the recommendations, compare their respective contexts, and clarify their proposals. Little by little, the recommendations take shape.

As the day draws to a close, it’s time to start filming! Facing the camera, the participants share their stories and their demands. Their candid, heartfelt words will be featured in the campaign videos.

Day 3: Share, make it your own, keep going 🌸

The final day and the final phase focused on the challenge of bringing this campaign to life.

Participants are brainstorming ways to share these resources—activist networks, media outlets, local events, community spaces, and more. It is clear that these resources need to be shared, adopted, adapted, and put to use.

The workshop concludes with a visit to a local initiative that supports migrants, serving as a reminder that successful models do exist—despite the obstacles—driven by local communities and solidarity.

Then comes the closing ceremony, the presentation of certificates, casual conversations, a sense of nostalgia for those exchanges, and above all, a desire to keep this momentum going.

Let’s keep making our voices heard 📢

This workshop marks a turning point in the Mob in Med project, as the tools take shape, the messages are refined, and the collective grows stronger.

Furthermore, this workshop confirms that barriers to mobility are neither isolated nor inevitable, but are the result of policy decisions and can (and must) be addressed.

A huge thank you to everyone who made these three days possible, to the participants—without whom this project would not exist—and to those who will continue to amplify these voices.
